Teeth Whitening

A mould is taken and a custom tray is made to ensure the best application of whitening gels.

Daily application of the whitening gel worn during the day or evening will whiten your teeth in a number of weeks.

Teeth whitening uses medical-grade solutions to remove stains from the surface of your teeth.

Regular visits to examine and asset the treatment.

Invisalign & Braces

Invisalign® straightens your teeth through a series of clear aligner trays that are custom made specifically for you. The aligners, which are rotated every two weeks, gradually shift your teeth using gentle pressure. You can temporarily remove your orthodontic appliances to eat and brush, making it easy to keep your teeth clean and cavity-free during the treatment process.

Because the aligners are clear, most people won’t be able to tell you’re wearing them. And once treatment is complete, you’ll have a beautiful smile you’ll want to show off as much as possible.

Orthodontics is a field of dentistry that deals with corrections involving jaw and teeth alignment.

Braces employ the use of wires and are usually one of three types

Old-fashioned, conventional braces, which employ the use of metal strips, or bands.

Metal or plastic brackets that are cemented or bonded to teeth.

Brackets that attach to the back teeth (also called lingual braces).

Braces are applied to teeth for various reasons, including poorly aligned jaws, crooked, crowded and missing teeth, or a bad bite

What orthodontic issues can Invisalign® correct?

  • Gaps between teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Misaligned jaws
  • Crossbite
  • Overbite
  • Underbite

Bridges

Bridges are natural-looking dental appliances that can replace a section of missing teeth. Because they are custom-made, bridges are barely noticeable and can restore the natural contour of teeth as well as the proper bite relationship between upper and lower teeth.

Porcelain Crowns / Same Day Crowns

Crowns are used to provide strength to teeth when a good portion of the crown of the tooth is lost.

Dental Crowns are fixed in place and look exactly like a tooth.

Replace a filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining

Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment

Dental crowns and Bridges are used to restore and protect broken down tooth structure when fillings are not possible. If you are missing teeth or looking to improve aesthetics Crestfield Dental can help you in achieving this

Root Canal Treatment

A root canal is a treatment that removes the pulp of your tooth, which is the soft tissue comprised of nerves, blood vessels, and tissue that extends from the crown of your tooth all the way down to the root. You may need a root canal if you pulp becomes infected, resulting in a toothache.

HYGIENE & Periodontal Treatment

A vast majority of teeth are lost due to the effects of gum disease and research has shown that early diagnosis and efficient treatment will help resolve the issue. Two of the most common diseases can be minimized by thorough oral hygiene. These are dental cavities/decay and periodontal/gum disease. They are both caused by plaque, a bacteria which is allowed to build up. Plaque is what we are brushing away when we clean our teeth.   It is when areas of plaque are left that those issues begin. To help you achieve and maintain optimal dental health the hygienist provides thorough teeth cleaning, dental health education and oral health advice.

Patients who have dental treatment such as crowns, bridgework, orthodontic treatment require special care and attention and often require aids such as superfloss or mini-interdental brushes i.e., Tepe Brushes which are essential.   These aids are sometimes difficult to master so you will be shown how best to use them and a personal hygiene plan by your hygienist will be given.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

  • Redness or bleeding of gums while brushing teeth,
  • Gum swelling
  • Spitting out blood after brushing teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Mobility teeth

The hygienist is specially trained in the prevention of periodontal disease and dental cavities. They aim to re-educate patients with regards to the use of toothbrushes, electronic aids, dental floss and inter-dental brushes. They carefully examine and chart your teeth and gums noting in particular: inflammation, bleeding, swelling and the presence of plaque and calculus.  Plaque and surface stains can be removed by gentle scraping and polishing.

WHITE FILLINGS

Fillings help restore teeth, which were damaged by decay.  White fillings are made of a composite material. They are often referred to as ‘composite fillings’ because of this material.

First at Crestfield Dental we will choose the shade of the composite that best matches your tooth colour. After removing the decay, we will use a special curing light to harden each layer of filling material. The filling will be shaped to fit your tooth and polished so that it remains smooth and resistant to staining. One of the advantages of white fillings is that, it is almost impossible to see that the tooth has been restored.

Local anaesthesia — this will be given at the beginning of your appointment to numb the area around the tooth.

Yes, we here at Crestfield can replace sliver fillings with white ones. You can discuss this at your next routine exam and we will advise a course of treatment for you.

Composite Bonding

Getting that perfect smile doesn’t always involve invasive procedures. Many patients opt for Composite Bonding as it is an affordable option to get that perfect smile. The treatments are also quick and comfortable for patients, and in the vast majority of cases a single session is all that’s required. It’s an ideal solution for people with chipped, broken teeth or teeth which are badly stained. We here at Cresfield Dental believe you do not have to go around with damaged, discoloured or disfigured teeth. Composite bonding can be used to fill in between gaps in teeth, especially those at the front which can make some people very conscious of their appearance. A little composite bonding and the gap disappears.

The majority of people are not familiar with composite bonding and what it does.  Composite bonding involves using a type of material cl composite resin, which is placed onto a tooth to fill spaces due to chips or gaps and makes it look straight and aligned with other teeth. It’s a relatively fast cosmetic dentistry procedure.   Here in Crestfield using composite bonding is routine and incredibly safe.

Having dental composite bonding involves one of our dentists removing part of the enamel on the surface of a tooth and then working out the best way to shape the composite resin to the tooth to restore it and get the best aesthetic effect.  A bonding agent is then placed on the area, and the composite resin is added and allowed to cure with the aid of a dental curing light.  Afterwards, the dentist will polish the tooth so that it looks its best, and possibly the surrounding teeth too.  With such a detailed procedure, a high level of skill and experience is required when doing composite bonding on a tooth.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

When a wisdom tooth has not come through in the correct position it is generally very difficult to clean. They are generally the last teeth to appear in the mouth.  For many people, there is inadequate space in the jaws to allow their wisdom teeth to erupt normally.  They can become stuck or impacted.    Unfortunately, in some cases it is impossible to save a tooth and extraction is needed.  This is discussed on an individual basis.  The oral surgeon gives 2 options: Local anaesthetic or IV Sedation.

Here are some of the services we provide in Crestfield Dental Practice

Local anaesthetic – This is where we use an injection to numb the area involved, in the same way as you would be numbed by your general dentist for any standard dental procedure.

Intravenous sedation – This is for those who are too nervous to proceed with just an injection only. This method involves the delivery of a sedative drug via a drip-line in your hand/arm and is carried out within the clinic. The sedative renders you very sleepy and relaxed.  You will need someone to accompany you on the day.

Dr Sinéad O’Dwyer BDS (Hons) NUI, MFDS RCS (Glasg), PGrad. Dip. Con. Sed., PGCert (TLHE), MOralSurg RCS (Eng), DClinDent (Oral Surgery)

Sinéad completed her 3-year postgraduate Oral Surgery training from Cork University Dental School and Hospital (CUDSH) in 2021.

Having graduated in Dentistry with honours from CUDSH in 2011, Sinéad moved to the United Kingdom. There she worked for the National Health Service as a general dentist dividing her time between practices in Essex and Kent. After this, she completed a Maxillofacial Senior House Office post at Leeds General Infirmary. It was in this role that she gained invaluable experience and exposure in oral surgery, intravenous sedation and the management of medically compromised patients. While in Leeds she attained Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons Glasgow.

In pursuit of an international perspective, a move to Sydney, Australia was embarked upon. For two years, she worked between private practice and Sydney Dental Hospital (SDH). In SDH she worked as a clinical educator, teaching final year dental students on exodontia clinics. She also worked for the Red Cross and International Health and Medical Services (IHMS)

With a desire to move home, Sinéad returned to Ireland in 2016 and worked as a Registrar in Accident and Emergency in Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH). There she coordinated a busy A+E department and was responsible for the training of newly qualified dentists. While in DDUH she completed a Postgraduate Diploma, with Distinction, in Conscious Sedation in Dentistry from Trinity College Dublin.

Subsequent to this, she successfully secured a place on the Oral Surgery training programme in CUDSH, where she is as aforementioned, qualified in 2021.

She provides all aspects of oral surgery care including:

  • Surgical and non-surgical extractions
  • Third molar surgery
  • Pre-orthodontic surgery
  • Pre-prosthetic surgery
  • Bone-grafting
  • Implant placement
  • Soft tissue management and biopsies
  • Apicoectomies
  • Management of cysts

Treatment is provided under local anaesthetic and intravenous conscious sedation.

REMOVAL OF IMPACTED WISDOM TEETH

This is a specific type of surgical extraction. As above, this often requires some surgical steps in order to retrieve the partially or fully buried wisdom tooth. Wisdom teeth commonly require removal as they do not have enough space to erupt fully, and so get trapped in the gum in a position that is difficult to clean.

EXTRACTION AND SURGICAL EXTRACTION

Many teeth require removal because they are broken down beyond repair. When there is minimal tooth structure remaining above/outside of the gum, a surgical extraction can be required. This involves gaining improved access to the tooth/root via an incision in the gum, and may involve division of the tooth into smaller more fragments. Typically sutures/stitches are required after this in order to close the wound/socket.

IV SEDATION

For nervous patients, treatment can be carried out under intra-venous sedation, in order to relax you and render you much less aware of the procedure taking place. The sedation makes you very sleepy, and typically patients do not remember much about the treatment.

EXPOSURE OF IMPACTED CANINE

This is where your orthodontist needs a buried tooth uncovered, in order to align it with your other teeth. Once we uncover this tooth, your orthodontist can then place a bracket onto the tooth, which they can then use to move the tooth into the desired position.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF SOFT TISSUES LESIONS

There are many different reasons why we develop lumps or swelling in the mouth. Thankfully most are innocent, but it is often necessary to investigate these, to ensure there is nothing sinister present. This can involve a very quick biopsy procedure in some cases.

BONE GRAFTING AND IMPLANTOLOGY

Implants are a sophisticated and commonly used method of replacing missing teeth, or supporting a lose denture. On some occasions, the bony foundations into which implants are to be placed are insufficient. Hence there are procedures whereby the required bone volume can be achieved by adding artificial/synthetic bone products. On some occasions these additional volumes can be gained by harvesting natural bone from elsewhere in the mouth.
